In September 2009 Bristol City Council advertised a design commission for the corner site of Stokes Croft and City Road. The design brief was developed following consultation with the local community and included these principal aspirations:
• The spaces should be as green as possible to give a visually rich and attractive centre to the street
• The designs should allow for flexible use
• The advertising hoardings should be removed
• The designs should be conceived as an artwork and/or include artwork
• The works should use high quality materials and be robust
• The designs should be achievable within the budget of £60,000
The designers short-listed for the City Road site were Dallas Pierce Quintero, Eudaimon and Gitta Gschwendtner. They developed their design concepts in more detail for an exhibition that took place in Stokes Croft, the St Pauls Family Learning Centre and the Architecture Centre in February 2010. Visitors to the exhibition were asked to express a preference as to which design they would like to see taken forward.
This consultation is now being extended until March 31st 2010 to get feedback from the wider public on the 3 shortlisted designs.
Responses can be made on line or at the Architecture Centre, Narrow Quay.
The decision on which scheme to commission will be based on the responses received in the consultation, but we are also seeking additional technical and financial information from the design teams to ensure that they can deliver the project effectively and to budget.
In the event of two designs receiving very similar levels of support the final decision will be made by the selection panel, who comprise members of the local community, council officers and the wider arts community in the city.
Eudaimon have been commissioned to develop their scheme for a planning application, if planning permission is approved work should commence in winter 2010 and be completed by April 2011.
