Clifton Conservation Area Character Appraisal

Consultation Overview

The Urban Design & Conservation Team will be producing a Character Appraisal for the Clifton Conservation Area.  A Character Appraisal is a document that outlines the significance and special interest of a Conservation Area; it details the features that make that specific area unique and provides an analysis of how that significance is vulnerable.  The process starts with a public meeting in the area, and 4-week consultation period to invite interested parties to put forward their views on any specific issues officers may like to consider before document drafting begins.

Why We Are Consulting

It is important to offer those with an interest in Clifton an opportunity to put forward their views, or to share specific knowledge on the area, so that the document can be as useful and as accurate as possible.  Consulting on the draft document will ensure greater accuracy and hopefully general support for the findings.  This process means local residents, developers, the Local Authority and other parties have had an opportunity to contribute to the work and will hopefully refer to the final document in determining how best to preserve or enhance the character of the Clifton Conservation Area.

What Happens Next

Once the initial public consultation has closed officers will begin surveying and drafting the appraisal document.  Once a draft has been completed, there will be a second public meeting and subsequent consultation period on the findings.  Feedback will be reviewed and the document updated accordingly before it is put to the relevant Planning Committee and other internal stakeholders for information.  Finally, the Appraisal is put to the Executive Member for approval and adoption in Spring/Summer 2010.  Once adopted, there is a process of final production and public notification.
