Two pilot 20mph areas are proposed as part of the Cycling City and Active Bristol collaboration, in order to improve road safety, encourage more people to take up walking and cycling, and to help provide higher quality local environments for people to live in.
The two proposed 20mph pilot areas cover Inner East Bristol and Inner South Bristol. We are planning to install 20mph signs at road entrances and smaller ones at regular intervals along the roadside. There will also be 20mph markings painted in the road at entrances to the area to remind people of the lower speed limit.
The 20mph limits will NOT involve the introduction of any physical traffic calming features such as speed humps, chicanes etc. The 20mph limit will apply to all roads within the pilot areas, except those that are considered to be major routes.
We want to hear people’s views and comments on the proposal so that we can take them into account when finalising the scheme.

In view of the number of comments we expect to receive, we will not be able to respond to everyone individually. Instead, once all of the responses have been analysed we will summarise the issues raised and publish them on the 20mph Speed Limits webpage - www.bristol.gov.uk/20mph - at the end of October 2009.
New proposals, which have been amended as a result of the Public Engagement process are now available on our website.
The new proposals (maps are dated 11 November 2009) for each pilot area can be viewed under the section 'Pilot area maps: Inner East Bristol; Inner South Bristol'.
It is anticipated that the statutory public consultation exercise for the Inner South Area will commence during December 2009. A notice will be published in the Bristol Evening Post and site notices will be fixed to street furniture within the roads affected. The notice will include a brief description of the proposals and explain where plans can be viewed and more details obtained. It will also give an address to which people can write, if they wish to object to or comment on the scheme. Submissions received by the closure date specified in the notice will be taken into consideration when the future of the scheme is decided. The statutory consultation for the Inner East Area will be undertaken in the New Year.
Please note that objections or comments submitted as part of the statutory consultation must be received at the address specified in the notice. The 20 mph e-mail address must not be used for this purpose. Submissions which are not received at the correct address or which are received after the closure date may be disregarded.
