King Street change of use

Overview

We would like to seek your opinion on the possibility of allowing businesses currently classed as A2 (banks, estate agents, betting offices) and A3 (restaurants and cafes) to move into King Street, Whitehaven.

Currently, King Street is restricted to businesses that fall into the Use Class A1 e.g. shops, hairdressers, post offices etc

Why we are consulting

The economic downturn and the increasing popularity of internet shopping have affected town centres all over the UK and Whitehaven is no exception. There are a number of vacant retail units along King Street and the Council and the local community are understandably concerned about this.

One way that we could encourage more businesses to take premises on King Street would be to relax the policy on the types of establishments that are allowed to operate there.
