South Lakeland District Housing Survey
Overview
A strategic Housing Survey is undertaken across South Lakeland every 5 years in order to understand housing demand, need for affordable housing and issues such as the need for housing for older people.
The results feed into planning policy and housing strategies
16,000 Households across South Lakeland are receiving a questionnaire by post. Other households are invited to complete a questionnaire online
Why we are consulting
It is vital that decisions on planning and housing strategies are based on sound up to date evidence of housing needs in South Lakeland.
The data from the survey supplies evidence of the need for affordable housing which will influence planning policy and also supplies evidence for funding for affordable homes.
What happens next
A full report on the results of the Housing Survey will be published by early September. It will be available on the South Lakeland District Council website.

Results
In June 2011 a District Wide Housing Needs survey was undertaken in South Lakeland on behalf of South Lakeland District Council.
Questionnaires were returned by over 4000 households from across the district. These were analysed and used to produce findings on current and future housing requirements in the district for both affordable and market housing.
The full results of this survey are included in the Council’s Strategic Housing Market Assessment 2011 which was adopted by the Council in November 2011. A summary of this can be found by following the Strategic Housing Market Assessment for South Lakeland link below.
The survey found that there is an annual need for 640 additional affordable homes in the District.
