The Sustainable Communities Act

Overview

The Sustainable Communities Act is intended to divert power and funding from Central Government to councils and local people to help them manage community issues at a local level and change things for the better. We need local people to advise and help us put forward proposals for action to Government. Anyone can make suggestions - if you have an idea for a project that you think would make Sutton a better place to live, we want to hear from you.

Why we are consulting

We are consulting because the ideas need to come from local people. We already know some of the things you have told us are important to you in previous consultations, but this is your opportunity to let us know how you think we can improve the Environmental, Economic, Social and Democratic health of your local area.

Results

A number of proposals were discussed at the Council's six Local Committees and the Equality and Diversity Forum. Of these proposals there was one which had majority support - residents told the Council they wanted more control over local planning. Following the consultation we have submitted a proposal to the LGA that would see Sutton become a pilot for taking local control over the planning appeals process for mid-scale developments. We are now awaiting a response from the LGA.
