Roundshaw Downs conservation grazing

Overview

Roundshaw Downs is Sutton’s largest Local Nature Reserve and site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation. We are proposing to introduce conservation grazing as site management tool improve the nature conservation value of the grassland at Roundshaw Downs. This involves installation of a permanent fencing enclosure.

Why we are consulting

We want to hear the views of site users on a grazing project to identify whether this project can be implemented in late 2011. We have provided two implementation options and would also like to hear your views which options you would prefer should the delivery supported.

Results

Conservation grazing at Roundshaw Downs:

The introduction of conservation grazing at Roundshaw Downs was agreed unanimously at the Local Committee meeting for Beddington and Wallington on 11 October 2011.

The proposals aim to ensure long-term improvements to the chalk grassland habitat at Roundshaw Downs. Chalk grassland is a local, regional and national Biodiversity Action Plan Priority Habitat. Improving the Borough’s biodiversity is part of Sutton’s commitment to become London’s most sustainable suburb.

A two-stage consultation was undertaken between December 2010 and October 2011. The consultation sought the views of site users as to whether a grazing project would be supported and what issues would need addressing to minimise the impact on current uses. This consultation resulted in a modification of the proposals to include a compartmentalised grazing area that allows rotation of livestock, which made the proposals acceptable to the majority of site users.

The detailed consultation results are available on the biodiversity webpages.
